What Is Street Worship?
We are in a time when worship is overflowing, and worshippers are being called out onto the streets to release their song in order to share the gift of worship with those who will never step foot in a church so that through it, they too can experience His love, presence, and power.
King David wrote, “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord.” (Psalm 40:3), and had a vision for how his worship would impact the lives of those who didn’t know the Lord. He saw how his songs - both the new and the old - would help others put their trust in God.
And this is what we are seeing - through worship, people who don’t know God, are experiencing His love for the first time. As we worship in city centres and town squares, people are drawn to the sound of worship and the words and the music are speaking to their hearts and to their situations. Some stop to listen, others want to chat and know more about what we are doing, others want to receive prayer. All are experiencing something of Jesus’ love, presence and power, with one man telling us that as he listened to us worship, the music was “healing his heart.”
Music has always been a powerful medium across generations and cultures, and so we shouldn’t be surprised when people are drawn to worship music and want to know more. By taking our worship outside of our church buildings, we are removing obstacles for others to enjoy worship, and through it, meet with Jesus.
